Theeyal Curry

This week I ended up making lot of Kerala dishes. Theeyal is a Kerala dish and it is very delicious with rice. It goes well with idly, dosa, appam and chapattis. This is one of my favorite dishes. The recipe can be made with vegetables like yam, snake gourd, egg plant and bitter gourd. I made it simple by using only the baby onions.

Ingredients: Recipe for two
  • 1 cup of baby onions finely chopped
  • ½ cup coconut
  • 1tsp tamarind paste
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 4-5 red chilies
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 5-6 pepper corns
  • ¼ tsp turmeric
  • 4-5 curry leaves
  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • Salt to taste

Method

  • Heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan and sauté the coconut until it turns light brown. Add the red chilies, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, pepper corns and sauté for a minute. Turn off the heat and allow it to cool. Grind the mixture to a fine paste.
  • Heat 2tsp of oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida and onions. Sauté the onions until it turn into transparent. Add the ground masala and cook for few seconds. Add ½ cup water, tamarind paste, salt and bring to boil.
  • Serve hot with rice.

I think I'll make this tonight - adding the bottle gourd I need to use up before the weekend shopping trip. Just one question - is the coconut fresh or dried? I assume since it's a Kerala recipe that it is fresh, yes?

    Thanks!
    :)

Lovely mouthwaterring dish. Thanx for sharing.Would like to make this, for breakfast with idlis. Is it OK to roast the coconut(I always use freshly grated coconut)and spices the previous night? Should I put it in the fridge?
I always am on the look out for curries that are an accompaniment to idlis. Chutney is not much preferred in my home. Sambhar gets boring after a while. Now I make your 'Tomato Curry' which is liked very much at my home. Thanx.
